ICAN
CASE STUDY-General report marking boxes
There are two marking
boxes that relate to your report in general. These boxes also present
opportunities to score cheap marks because they substantially have nothing to
do with the Case Study’s requirement.

i.
First
Impression
As you can see, the box is does not
change. That is why it should be a sure-banker for you. Like I mentioned in the
first post, 1 point in a box is potentially worth two marks. So, something as
simple as numbering your pages can earn you two marks.
Most of the point in these boxes are
common-sensical
ii.
Sufficient,
appropriate heading
This means that you should use headings
in such a way that will make you report easy to read and grade.
Note, in a normal report, a terms of
reference might be necessary. However, if you write a terms of reference in the
exam, you will have wasted your time because there is no mark for it. That’s
why I am educating you about the marking guide.
iii.
Appropriate
use of paragraghs and sentences
I assume that you will score this point.
iv.
Legible
writing
I also assume that you will score this
v.
Correctly-numbered
pages
A decent percentage of students do not
number their pages. That’s two marks lost because:
3
points= 3marks AND
4points=
5 marks
So, once the time for the exam start,
you should first divide your answer booklet into the part for the main report
and the part for the appendix. Make sure you leave enough space for the main
report. After that, number the main-report part to the end.
vi.
Conclusion
This is a very cheap way to score another
five marks.

i.
First
Impression
This box, like the previous one does not
change. It also offers another opportunity to score easy marks.
ii.
Disclaimer
This is the main reason why students do
not score 5 marks in this section. They don’t understand the marking guide, so
they are not aware that a disclaimer is required. Here’s a simple disclaimer:
“Disclaimer
This report has been produced for the
sole use of (Company Name). No liability
is accepted to any third party.”
You can either start or end your report
with the disclaimer.
iii.
Suitable
language
This means that you should only use
formal language in your report.
a. Do
not use slangs
b. Do
not abbreviate words without a standard abbreviation, e.g you-u
c. Write
words out in full, e.g, “Do not” instead of “Don’t”
d. Do
not use first-person pronouns, e.g. I or we.
e. Do
not add and apostrophe when pluralizing an acronym, e.g. the correct plural of
ICAN is ICANs
iv.
Tactful
and ethical comments
To get this point, don’t say write
anything you can not say to your Grandmother.
v.
Acceptable
spelling and punctuation
It is assumed that a student at this
level will score this point.
Overall Conclusion
If you understand this two boxes very
well, then, you have gained 10 marks before stepping in to the exam hall.
